Gumtree Car Scams: How to Protect Yourself

Gumtree is one of the largest free classified sites in the UK, and cars are one of its biggest categories. Thousands of private sellers list vehicles every day, and prices are often lower than AutoTrader or eBay Motors.

That informality comes with a cost. Gumtree has minimal seller verification, no purchase protection for vehicle sales, and a very low barrier to listing. Which makes it a natural hunting ground for scammers.

This guide covers the most common car scams on Gumtree right now, and what to do before you part with any money.

Why Gumtree attracts car scams

Anyone with an email address can list a car on Gumtree. There's no requirement to prove ownership, no dealer checks, and no buyer protection if the sale goes wrong.

That creates the right conditions for:

The genuine bargains are real. But so are the risks.

The most common Gumtree car scams

1. The clocked mileage scam

A car is advertised with 45,000 miles at a price that reflects it. What the seller doesn't mention is that the car showed 95,000 miles two MOT tests ago.

Mileage fraud is illegal, but it still happens regularly on private sales. One way to catch it is by checking the MOT history, which records the mileage at every test. If the numbers drop or jump suspiciously, that's a red flag.

2. The write-off scam

A car that's been in a serious accident gets written off by the insurer and categorised as CAT S (structural damage) or CAT N (non-structural damage). These cars can legally be repaired and resold, but the seller is required to disclose it.

Many don't.

A CAT S car that hasn't been properly repaired can be dangerous. A CAT N car might look fine but carry hidden damage that affects safety and resale value. Either way, the car is worth significantly less than the asking price suggests.

Run a vehicle history check before agreeing to view. A basic free check will show write-off status.

3. The outstanding finance scam

The seller has £7,000 left on a finance agreement. The car still legally belongs to the finance company, not them. They sell it to you, take the cash, and stop making payments.

Weeks or months later, the finance company repossesses the car. Legally it's theirs. You lose the car and the money.

This is one of the most common used car scams in the UK. Always check for outstanding finance before buying from a private seller on Gumtree.

4. The deposit scam

A listing appears at a price well below market value. The seller says there's a lot of interest but they'll hold it if you send a deposit. They're away for work, or abroad, and can't meet right now.

There is no car. Once you transfer the money, the listing disappears.

Never pay a deposit for a car you haven't seen in person. No legitimate private seller needs a deposit before a viewing.

5. The stolen car scam

The car is listed at an attractive price. The V5C looks genuine. But the car was stolen, the number plates were cloned from an identical legitimate vehicle, and the paperwork was forged.

You buy it, drive it for a few weeks, and it gets flagged on ANPR. The police seize it. You have no legal claim to the car.

Be cautious of sellers who push for a quick sale, price the car notably below market value, or resist a proper inspection. Always check the VIN stamped on the chassis matches the V5C.

The quickest check: MOT history on the listing

Most of the above requires separate research. MOT history is the one check you can do instantly, right on the Gumtree listing, without opening a new tab.

The Don't Buy A Lemon Chrome extension reads the number plate from the listing photos and pulls the full DVSA MOT history automatically. You see every test, every mileage reading, every advisory and failure before you've messaged the seller.

It works on Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace, AutoTrader, eBay Motors, and more. It's free.
